Founded
in 1990, SOWAC provides business training, mentoring and financing
services for women and men with barriers. From 1993 through mid-1997,
SOWAC enrolled 288 students in its training program and helped in the
startup or expansion or over 65 businesses in Jackson and Josephine
counties. In 1996-97, SOWAC also piloted its services to low-income
Hispanic entrepreneurs and very rural entrepreneurs. Training graduates
may apply to SOWAC's Mentor Program to receive assistance from an
experienced person who volunteers expertise over a six month period,
and/or for a SOWAC business loan of up to $25,000. SOWAC is funded by
the SBA Office of Women Business Ownership, private foundations, client
fees, interest income and local contributions.
