China's southern resort island of Hainan has confirmed 30 cholera cases and nearly 300 suspected cases in the past few days.

Cholera is transmitted by contaminated water or food and at its most severe, can result in death from dehydration and kidney failure.

It's believed continuous torrential rains on the island this month could be one reason for the epidemic.
